It’s been a little while since I’ve done one of these, and this week I got an idea from Dan’s challenge. Last week, we (other writers and I) offered lines that could work as first lines for stories this week. I chose J.A. Allen‘s opening line for my story.
Also, Dan gave us 1,000 words, but I’m gonna try to get it done in 100. It’s dark so be aware if triggers are an issue for you.
Here goes!
The Next One
She deserved it.
I stare at her graceful form sprawled across the floor, one arm resting on her stomach and the other above her head, her glassy eyes glaring at me. Crimson coats the counter, the cabinet, her body. This one dropped the blade. Minutes ago, it hit the tile with a clank.
She focuses, as if she can see me, and draws her last breath.
She deserved it.
They always do in the end. Three thousand years, and not one has resisted. Fought. Wanted to live.
For a moment, I wish this one had. Sighing, I float away.
Time to find the next one.
I want this in the anthology.

Hi Allison,
Your story is really good but very creepy. It sounded like it was written from the perspective of a vampire, or I might have watched too many B movies about vampires as a young girl. Anyway, I enjoyed it. Thanks for posting it.

What the “presence” was is open to interpretation. So vampire works. 🙂

I’m hoping the 3,000 years + floating was enough. These short ones are tricky.
