The Songs of Drake and the Fliers

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000446_00062]Welcome to the latest Bonus Material post for Drake and the Fliers. This one’s gonna get a little musical.

Some writers use music for inspiration. I know of a couple who got whole story ideas from a song (I had one for a short story). This isn’t quite like that. As I write, I hear songs that hit me as fitting with the story or with a character. I’m not actively seeking songs to go with the story. They just kind of happen. But when they do, listening to them helps me focus on whatever elements align with them. Drake had two songs that went with two completely different moods.

The first song, The Phoenix by Fall Out Boy, captured the badass nature of the story (fire, anyone??) and of Preston’s character, specifically.

I feel more awesome just listening to that song.

The next song aligned with Drake’s relationship with Talon. If you know the story and pay close attention to the lyrics, you’ll notice parts don’t match (like the bank robber thing in The Phoenix didn’t), but it’s more about the feel and essence of the song. Little Do You Know by Alex & Sierra nailed the connection I imagined between Drake and Talon.

Does anyone else have goosebumps, because I totally do.

So those are Drake’s songs! If you’ve read the book, what do you think? Are they good matches?
